The Anterior Approach
Description
The anterior approach to total hip arthroplasty is a surgical technique that has seen increasing adoption, particularly in the United States. It offers several advantages, including minimal muscle disruption, which can lead to a quicker recovery for patients. Variants of this approach, such as the bikini incision, are also gaining traction for their cosmetic benefits. Despite its benefits, the anterior approach comes with challenges such as a steep learning curve for surgeons and potential risks like periprosthetic fractures and nerve injuries. Proper technique is crucial, as these risks can be mitigated with careful execution. Surgeons can use specialized tables for better access or navigate the approach without them, but the nuances of either method are vital for achieving optimal outcomes. Patients should be informed of possible complications, including numbness in the lateral cutaneous nerve and the more serious risk of femoral nerve injury. As the technique continues to evolve, it is clear that the anterior approach is becoming a prominent option for hip arthroplasty.
