The Medial Patellofemoral Ligament

Description

Dr Laurie Hiemstra gives her expert insights focuses on the biomechanics of the passive stabilizers surrounding the patella (kneecap). She highlights the significance of understanding these mechanics, particularly how stability is achieved during knee extension. When the knee is flexed, stability is primarily provided by bony structures, positioning the patella securely within the trochlear groove, even in cases of trochlear dysplasia. Conversely, the patella is noted to be most unstable when the knee is fully extended, a scenario where the medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) plays a crucial role in maintaining stability.
