Using Small Community Hospitals for Joint Replacement Surgery

Description

In this presentation, Kristine Desjardine, the Advanced Practice Nurse of orthopedics and manager of the regional hip and knee central intake at Queensway Carleton Hospital, shares insights on the collaborative effort between Queensway Carleton Hospital and Arnprior Regional Hospital to implement a same-day discharge program for total knee replacement patients. Kristine highlights her extensive background, including critical care experience and work in infection prevention, as well as her notable service as a civilian critical care nurse in Afghanistan.

The presentation elaborates on the two hospitals' capabilities and organizational structures, detailing the number of surgeries performed and staffing at each location. Kristine discusses how they planned to enhance operational efficiency and improve patient safety while managing surgical volume and waitlists at both facilities.

She explains the collaborative planning phase involving various stakeholders and the development of critical metrics to ensure quality and safety in patient care. Kristine also outlines the educational programs established to prepare Arnprior staff for orthopedic procedures and emphasizes the shared resources and protocols that facilitate seamless pre-operative and post-operative patient management.

As the program has evolved, Kristine reflects on the successes, including a low conversion rate of patients needing admission post-surgery and the continuous improvement of operational procedures. She addresses the limitations faced in this initiative, including resource allocation and maintaining patient safety standards, while ending on a positive note about the program's establishment as a routine practice in both hospitals.
