Determined to become a surgeon specializing in spinal procedures, Dr. Jean-Marc Mac-Thiong undertook, once he had his degree in mechanical engineering, studied medicine and then specialized in orthopedics at the University of Montreal, which was followed by a subspecialization in spine surgery at the Twin Cities Spine Center in Minneapolis in the United States. At the same time, he completed a master's degree in biomedical sciences, where he worked on software to track trunk movement during surgical procedures, and then a doctorate, also in biomedical sciences, during which he was interested in the posture and balance of patients with spondylolisthesis, a disease involving the sliding of a vertebra that appears mainly during childhood.
