As the inaugural Chair of the Department of Surgery & Perioperative Care for the Dell Medical School at UT Austin, I have overseen the creation of the first academic surgical Department at a Tier 1 Research University in over 50 years, focused on our unique mission of Revolutionizing how people get and stay healthy. Our Department has grown from a single employee (me) to over 250 Faculty and over 200 staff, with annual revenues of over $100M; a robust education portfolio that includes 3 ACGME accredited Residency Programs in General Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, and Emergency Medicine, and 5 Clinical Fellowship Programs; and a growing footprint in extramurally funded clinical, translational, health services, and basic science research. I also served as the Physician Executive Leader for the Musculoskeletal service line for Ascension Health, a 160-hospital system spread throughout a range of locations across the country with annual net patient service revenue of over $25 billion. In this role, I was engaged in the development and implementation of Ascension's national strategy for employer-based alternative payment contracting, incorporating outcomes measurement into routine clinical practice, and managing the transition of musculoskeletal services from the inpatient to the outpatient setting.
As the Past President of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, I had the privilege of serving our over 39,000 members from across the globe in pursuing our vision of becoming the trusted leaders in advancing musculoskeletal health. During my Presidency (2023-2024), I oversaw the development of AAOS's 5 year strategic plan, positioning our organization for continued success during a very dynamic time in health care. I previously served in numerous local, regional, and national leadership roles, including the William R. Murray Professor and Vice Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco; President of the California Orthopaedic Association; Chair of the American Joint Replacement Registry; Chair of the AAOS Health Care Systems Committee; and Chair of the AAOS Council on Research & Quality.
My experiences as a practicing surgeon, health system executive, health services researcher, clinical educator, and leader in regional and national health system transformation have equipped me with a unique perspective and insights into the challenges and opportunities that face the U.S. health care system in its quest to deliver on the promise of improving the health of our population by promoting and incentivizing 'health' over 'care'.
