Dr. Lisa C Howard is an assistant professor who specialises in primary and complex revision hip And knee replacement at the University of British Columbia Hospital and Vancouver General Hospital. Following completion of her medical degree at the University of British Columbia, she completed her residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of British Columbia. She then went on to complete a subspecialty shoulder and elbow Reconstruction Fellowship at the University of Ottawa. Following this, she went on to complete another highly competitive and sought after subspecialty fellowship in lower extremity arthroplasty at the University of British Columbia with mentors Bas Masri, Don Garbuz, Nelson Greidanus and Clive Duncan. During this time, she was trained extensively in complex hip and knee arthroplasty. She completed a Master of Health Science Degree from the University of British Columbia.
Dr. Howard, like her colleagues, specializes in complex primary and revision hip and knee replacement including robotic knee surgery. She is the first female academic arthroplasty surgeon at the University of British Columbia Hospital and Vancouver General Hospital. She has a keen in interest in large pelvic reconstruction surgeries using 3D printed custom prosthetic components as well as arthroplasty reconstructions for adolescents and young adults with complex hip problems.
Her research interests include adverse surgical events reporting, clinical outcomes for hip and knee replacement patients and large pelvic reconstructions. Recently she was a co-author on a paper titled “The Impact of HLA Genotype on Bacterial Infection Rates and Successful Eradication in Total Hip Arthroplasty” that was awarded the prestigious 2024 John Charnley Award by The Hip Society. She is the current Fellowship director for the lower extremity reconstruction fellowship at the University of British Columbia and supervises numerous research works from residents and clinical fellows. She is currently a member of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association (COA), Canadian Arthroplasty Society (CAS), and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). She is frequently invited to peer-review scientific manuscripts for prominent journals such as the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and has given international presentations at scientific meetings and has also authored several textbook chapters.
