Since Jan 2019 Tim Wilton has been the Medical Director of the National Joint Registry. For one year May2021-April 2022 he was also Interim Chair of the NJR.
A specialist in lower limb arthroplasty and knee revision surgery. he was active in the British Assoc for Surgery of the Knee, and the British Orthopaedic Association. President of BASK 2011-2012 and was involved in helping to run BASK for the previous decade.
He was an NHS consultant in Derby from 1990- 2021 with research interests in operative techniques for knee replacement and improving outcomes for hip and knee replacement. Previous publications also related to research into metabolic bone disease and femoral neck fracture.
He was President of the British Orthopaedic Association for 2015-16 and on the executive of the BOA from 2013-2018.
He was a member of the MHRA Medical Devices Committee and involved in improving safety of medical devices. He was instrumental in the introduction of ratings for knee replacement (ODEP Rating) and actively involved in running the Beyond Compliance system to help surgeons and patients make more rational decisions for the use of hip and knee implants. He helped to develop the National Joint Registry being on the Steering Committee for 4 years when it was set up.
He has been Medical Director of the NJR since 1st Jan 2019. He attends a number of congresses and meetings concerning Registry development and applications, and is asked to speak at national and international meetings on the subject of Registries. He was elected to the Board of the International Society for Arthroplasty Registries in 2022.
He has travelled and lectured widely, speaking mainly on the subject of knee replacement, operative technique and revision surgery. He has been involved in the development of knee implants and instruments.
His energy is largely directed towards improving the safety, consistency and functional benefits of joint replacement patients. He teaches on aspects of these matters widely, and has travelled in the middle east in particular to that end.
He has been involved with the Editorial Board of the Bone and Joint Journal for almost 2 decades and was a member of the Council 2013-2019 and Chairman of the Journal Group from 2017-2019.
