Professor Adetola Adesida

Biography

Adetola B. Adesida is a Professor (full) in the Department of Surgery at the University of Alberta. In 1999, Adesida received his PhD in Pharmacy from the Victoria University of Manchester, studying drug delivery systems. During his postdoc at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Cell-Matrix Research at the Victoria University of Manchester, he moved into musculoskeletal tissue engineering with a focus on meniscal fibrocartilage of the knee joint. In 2006, he was awarded a dual fellowship from Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital to study the role of insulin-like growth factor binding proteins (IGFBPs) in the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis. In 2007, Adesida received a European Commission Marie-Curie transfer of knowledge fellowship to work on - an industry-academia partnership project for a novel treatment of knee injuries. The project was a collaboration between CellCoTec, a development-stage orthopaedic company in the Netherlands and Tissue Engineering Group in the Department of Surgery at University Hospital Basel in Switzerland. In 2009, Adesida was appointed as an Assistant Professor in Department of Surgery at the University of Alberta. In 2013, Adesida received a CIHR award to study tissue engineering of knee meniscus using mesenchymal stem cells. In 2015, he was granted tenure at the University of Alberta. His research interests lie generally in stem cell biology, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine (TERM) strategies of the meniscus and articular cartilage.
