COF J. Édouard Samson Award Talk - The Evolution of Arthroscopic Anatomic Glenoid Reconstruction: Development and Clinical Outcomes

Description

In this presentation, Hans Jurgen Kreder introduces Dr. Ivan Wong, the recipient of the J. Edouard Samson award, which recognizes outstanding early career research in Canadian orthopedic practices. Dr. Wong's research focuses on minimally invasive surgical techniques for shoulder dislocations, particularly the Arthroscopic Anatomic Glenoid Reconstruction (AAGR), aimed at improving patient outcomes. He outlines the significance of understanding shoulder instability, risk factors associated with dislocation, and the impact of timely intervention on cartilage damage.

Dr. Wong discusses the evolution of techniques and the critical role of bone loss assessment in selecting appropriate surgical interventions. He notes that traditional methods like the Bankart repair may not always yield satisfactory results, especially in cases of significant bone loss. By employing distal tibial allografts in a novel yet effective way, he proposes a potentially more effective solution to reconstruct bone while minimizing complications.

Throughout the presentation, Dr. Wong emphasizes the importance of education, innovative surgical practices, and evolving teaching methods, including virtual training for less invasive techniques. The audience is invited to engage in discussions about the implications of his findings on future orthopedic practices, demonstrating both the advancements in surgery and the value of shared knowledge in the medical field.
