Comparative Reliability of 3 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging to Arthoscopy Findings in Femoroacetabular Impingement
Description
Mehnoor Khaliq, a core trainee from Yorkshire, presents research on the diagnostic accuracy of 3 Tesla MRI in identifying Femoroacetabular Impingement (FAI), highlighting its effectiveness compared to traditional MRI and MRA. FAI leads to hip pain and potential osteoarthritis due to anatomical abnormalities causing damage to the labrum and cartilage. The study reviews literature that demonstrates 3T MRI's superiority in detecting acetabular cartilage damage without the complications related to dye injection required in MRA, emphasizing reduced risk of infection and lower costs. The data collected from 59 cases over four years shows varying sensitivity and specificity in detecting labral tears and cam deformities, concluding that while 3T MRI performs comparably for labral tears and cam deformities, it may be less effective for assessing cartilage lesions. The research advocates for 3T MRI's feasibility in diagnosing FAI with suggestions for further studies to bolster its use in clinical settings.
