CORS Research 2: Surgeons’ Preferences for Patellar Management During Primary Total Knee Arthroplasty
Description
In this informative session, Joy MacDermid introduces Emil Schemitsch, an experienced orthopedic surgeon and leader in the field, who will discuss the controversial topic of surgeons' preferences for patellar management during total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Schemitsch presents findings from a survey conducted to assess current practices in patella resurfacing among orthopedic surgeons, showing a divide in opinions on resurfacing practices. Although previous meta-analyses suggest minimal differences between resurfaced and unresurfaced patellas, many surgeons still have varying indications for resurfacing, and there is uncertainty regarding the clinical significance of these practices.
The survey revealed that approximately 67% of respondents routinely perform patellar resurfacing, with practices varying widely across different regions and professional backgrounds. The results indicate a need for further research through randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to establish clearer guidelines and consensus within the orthopedic community. Additionally, Schemitsch emphasizes the importance of surgeon engagement and willingness to adapt practices based on emerging research. The session concludes with an open floor, during which MacDermid invites questions from attendees, highlighting the ongoing discussions surrounding this clinical challenge.
