Dual Mobility Cup Versus Conventional Total Hip Arthroplasty for Femoral Neck Fractures: An International Multi-Registry Study
Description
In this webinar presentation, James Masters, an ST6 in the Warwick rotation, discusses a comprehensive study comparing cup versus conventional total hip arthroplasty for femoral neck fractures. The presentation begins with acknowledgments to key contributors and highlights the significant complications associated with total hip replacements, particularly the high dislocation rates that may reach up to 20%. The focus then shifts to dual mobility constructs, which feature a larger head-neck ratio intended to provide additional stability. Master's review of national registries culminates in a systematic analysis encompassing 15,000 dual mobility and 97,000 conventional hip replacements across various regions including the US, Australia, Denmark, and the UK. Key findings reveal that while dual mobility is associated with reduced dislocation rates, it poses a higher risk for infection and indicates a troubling trend of increased mortality in this patient population. The presentation also navigates the complexities of data interpretation across different registries and encourages further examination of regional practices, pooling of diverse clinical outcomes, and the implications for hip fracture management.
