Female and Younger Orthopaedic Sport Medicine Patients are More Negatively Affected by COVID-19 Related Health Care Closures
Description
This presentation by Michaela Kopka examines the impact of COVID-19 related health care closures on female and younger orthopedic sport medicine patients, highlighting that these groups faced more negative outcomes compared to others. The study surveyed patients whose orthopedic surgeries were postponed during the lockdowns and found significant increases in physical symptoms, mental health issues, and difficulty returning to work. It revealed that while younger patients accessed virtual physiotherapy resources more frequently, they still reported greater negative effects on their health and recovery. The analysis differentiated results by sex and age, indicating that females experienced increased anxiety, pain, and concern regarding their recovery compared to males, and younger individuals faced more severe impacts than older patients. The findings emphasize the need for targeted health care strategies as society moves forward and reallocates resources post-pandemic.
