Free Paper Session: Complex Ankle Arthrodesis with a Circular Frame: A Prospective Multicentre Cohort Study Showing 100% Union Rates and Complete Deformity Correction

Description

In this presentation, Thomas Donnelly discusses their clinical experience regarding the use of circular frames for complex ankle arthrodesis in Liverpool. He outlines the importance of ankle arthrodesis as a treatment for end-stage osteoarthritis (OA), highlighting the methods of open and arthroscopic surgeries with both internal and external fixation techniques. Thomas emphasizes the generally inferior union rates associated with external fixation compared to internal methods.

The presentation provides data collected from 25 patients over three years (2018-2021), analyzing various factors including demographics, infection rates, and other medical histories. The results show all patients achieved union, with a mean time of 100 days, and most deformities were corrected to within 5 degrees of neutral. He shares specific patient cases, detailing their treatment protocols and outcomes, including a few complications. The presentation concludes that circular fixators are effective tools for managing complex cases involving infection and deformity, reaffirming the high union success rates despite minimal complications. Additionally, Thomas notes he has no conflicts of interest.
