Free Paper Session: Management of Severe Congenital Deficiency of the Femur: Has Much changed in the 21st Century?
Description
In this presentation, George Cross discusses the management of proximal femoral focal deficiency (PFFD), a rare congenital condition characterized by varying degrees of femoral deficiency. The presentation outlines the condition's prevalence, challenges in treatment, and modern surgical and non-surgical management strategies. He details the spectrum of PFFD, from mild femoral hyperplasia, which can be treated with limb lengthening, to more severe cases that may require complex surgical interventions, such as the SUPERhip procedure or amputation. Cross emphasizes the evaluation of functional outcomes from prosthetic use, exploring data from 146 case records, with a focus on both the emotional and physical impacts of surgical interventions. He shares findings that children generally show better functional scores compared to adults and highlights the potential benefits of surgical treatments in enhancing quality of life and prosthetic efficiency. Limitations of the study are noted, including the rarity of the condition and the diverse treatment histories of patients, leading to recommendations for broader collaboration in data collection to improve outcomes for patients with PFFD.
