Free Paper Session: Osseointegration for Transtibial Amputees Confers Mobility Benefits with Limited Complications through Two Years

Description

This presentation, delivered by orthopedic consultant Muhammad Adeel Akhtar, focuses on transtibial osseointegrated reconstruction for lower limb amputees. Adeel emphasizes the significance of this surgical option for amputees who face challenges with traditional prosthetics due to socket-related issues. He highlights the existing literature that shows how osseointegration enhances the quality of life and mobility for amputees, noting a lack of sufficient studies specifically addressing transtibial osseointegration.

The study presented includes a comprehensive analysis of 91 patients, 102 procedures conducted between 2014 and 2018, examining demographics, indications for surgery, complications, and functional outcomes. Adeel provides specific patient case examples, discussing complications faced—such as infections and the removal of implants—alongside the functional improvements noted in various tests before and after surgery.

Results from the study show a significant improvement in functional outcomes, including prosthetic use, physical component scores from the SF-36 survey, and mobility assessments via the Timed Up and Go Test and six-minute walk test. Adeel concludes that while complications exist, effective patient selection and ongoing improvements in surgical techniques and implants could enhance outcomes for future amputees.
