Getting it Right Eventually - Where Are We With BOAST's, GIRFT and MTC's: Trauma, an Update from the Center

Description

In this presentation, Rob Bentley, National Clinical Director for Major Trauma and Burns, discusses significant upcoming changes to the commissioning of specialized services within the NHS in the UK, prompted by legislation enacted in summer 2022. He explains that as of April 2024, the 42 integrated care boards (ICBs) will be responsible for commissioning specialized and localized services instead of NHS England. Bentley outlines the characteristics of specialized services, which are high-cost and limited to a small number of providers, emphasizing the need for integrated commissioning to improve patient care and tackle health inequalities. He describes the current financial structure, where specialized services budget was around £22.9 billion, representing 15% of the NHS total budget.

The ICBs will now decide how to best allocate resources based on local population needs rather than individual provider needs, thus enabling a more coordinated care approach. This shift aims to enhance patient experiences by focusing on prevention, holistic care, and seamless transitions from hospitals to community settings. Bentley highlights ongoing efforts to ensure quality standards in care, including the development of new care standards for major trauma and the creation of a National Major Trauma Registry for better data management.

He concludes by inviting collaboration among stakeholders to ensure successful implementation of these transitions while maintaining service quality. Bentley also offers to answer any questions via email.
