Going Faster Than PROMs: Early Assessment of Post-TKR/THA Recovery Through Physical Activity Markers

Description

This presentation from the ISTA 2024 conference held in Nashville discusses a study on the early assessment of post-transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TCAR) and physical recovery markers using digital solutions. Conducted in Belgium at the University of Hasselt in collaboration with the digital platform 'Move Up', the study addresses the current challenges of tracking patient recovery between surgical visits when healthcare professionals often lack insights into a patient's condition. The study emphasizes the utilization of wearable tech to capture data on patient pain levels and activity metrics, thus providing surgeons with valuable information to prioritize patient care. The focus was on analyzing recovery parameters in patients who underwent arthroplasty, employing a mobile app and low-cost devices to collect objective activity data. The findings reveal discrepancies in recovery speeds between patients who reach minimal clinically important differences (MCID) and those who do not. It concludes that daily automated data collection enables better identification of slow recovery rates and correlates with traditional measures like the forgotten joint score, indicating a promising future for integrating digital health solutions into orthopedic care.
