Great MSK Care: The Vision, the Opportunity and the Reality (BOA Orthopaedic Committee)

Description

The session held by the BOA Orthopedic Committee, co-chaired by Nick Aresti and Julian Owen, focuses on the current challenges and opportunities within orthopedic practices, specifically addressing the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and anticipated economic recession. The event features notable speakers including Professor Deborah Eastwood, who discusses the alarming state of orthopedic waiting lists in the UK, highlighting a significant backlog of over 770,000 patients awaiting care and a strain on surgical admissions.

Justin Green presents the OpenPredictor project, which aims to apply artificial intelligence and machine learning to improve patient outcomes and streamline surgical processes. The project utilizes large datasets to identify high-risk patients and better allocate surgical resources through innovative analytics.

Additionally, Jonathan Hobby discusses operating outside traditional theater settings to increase surgical capacity and efficiency, effectively utilizing minor procedure rooms to treat patients where appropriate. He emphasizes the importance of safety and patient satisfaction in these environments.

Finally, Kanthan Theivendran outlines the development of the Open Outcomes Digital PROMs platform, which aims to standardize patient-reported outcome measures in orthopedic care, promoting improved data collection and patient engagement.

The session concludes with a dialogue addressing the need for collaboration across healthcare systems to tackle waiting list challenges and improve efficiencies in orthopedic care delivery.
