How To Support Clinicians and Enable Them To Carry Out Clinical Research (BOA ResComm CTU session): From Research Idea to Funded Study Using Co-Design
Description
In this session, Alexia Karantana, a clinical academic hand surgeon, presents a framework for developing research funding applications through the concept of co-design. She outlines the traditional steps of initiating a research project, such as conducting literature reviews, building teams, and formalizing research questions, typically structured in the PICO format. However, she advocates for a more collaborative approach where researchers engage with various stakeholders—including both patients and healthcare professionals—to gather insights that shape research inquiries. This community-centered strategy aims to create research protocols that genuinely reflect the needs and preferences of those directly impacted by the study. Through the example of the ongoing Point trial, which compares surgical vs. non-surgical treatments for hand fractures, she illustrates how building partnerships and prioritizing stakeholder input can enhance the relevance and success of clinical research. Alexia encourages researchers to relinquish control over study designs and to collaborate openly with community members, paving the way for research that is scientifically rigorous yet responsive to the real-world needs of patients and clinicians.
