How We Almost Doubled Our Figures - Optimising Our NJR Data Quality Audit
Description
In this presentation, Adam Watts discusses the significance of elbow joint replacements within the context of the National Joint Registry (NJR). Although elbow replacements comprise a small part of the registry, their data quality is crucial for improving patient safety and clinical outcomes. Watts provides a disclosure regarding his funding from Wright Medical and emphasizes the NJR's primary purpose of ensuring patient safety by accurately tracking which implants are utilized in patients.
He elaborates on the challenges related to data collection for elbow replacements, highlighting how missing or inaccurate data can significantly impact the registry's overall validity due to the lower volume of elbow procedures compared to hip and knee replacements. To address these issues, Watts outlines the steps taken to gather and verify data, including collaboration with surgical trainees and hospital data managers.
From 2012 to 2020, a comprehensive audit identified thousands of missing or inaccurate elbow procedures. Ongoing efforts to enhance data completeness led to an impressive improvement, with the completeness of data rising from 61% to 84%. An increase in recorded radial head replacements surged by nearly 200%, illustrating heightened awareness and responsibility among surgeons to submit accurate data. Watts concludes by expressing gratitude to participating organizations and emphasizing the continued efforts to improve data accuracy and completeness within the NJR.
