Impact of COVID-19 on Clinical Outcomes for Patients with Fractured Hip: A Multi-centre Observational Cohort Study (NOF-COV19 Study)
Description
The presentation focuses on a multicenter observational study that analyzes the impact of COVID-19 on clinical outcomes for patients suffering from fractured hips. Led by orthopedic registrar Damir Rasidovic, the study investigates mortality rates and other clinical metrics during the early stages of the pandemic (March to April 2020). Key findings include a significant increase in 30-day mortality rates for hip fracture patients with COVID, which reached 14.4% compared to much lower rates prior to the pandemic. The COVID cohort was observed to be older, had more males, and included a greater number of patients from institutional care compared to the non-COVID group. Additionally, the COVID cohort experienced a longer average hospital stay. Limitations of the study include variability in testing protocols among different centers and the potential biases associated with observational studies. The results are critical as they highlight the additional risks faced by hip fracture patients during a time when healthcare systems were heavily burdened by the pandemic.
