Is it Feasible to Implement a Rapid Discharge Pathway for Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Patients undergoing Posterior Spinal Instrumentation and Fusion in a Single Payer Universal Healthcare System? A Canadian Perspective
Description
In this presentation, Zachary Devries discusses the implementation and outcomes of a rapid recovery pathway for adolescents undergoing posterior spinal fusion surgery for idiopathic scoliosis. He highlights the significance of optimal surgical management in reducing the length of hospital stays and associated costs, emphasizing the high financial burden of scoliosis surgeries in the United States. Through the study encompassing cases from March 2010 to March 2019, the results indicate a considerable reduction in hospital length-of-stay by approximately two days and a decrease in costs associated with bed occupancy post-surgery, without an increase in complications. The analysis reveals improved outcomes, including earlier initiation of pain management and physical activity, underscoring the success of the rapid recovery pathway in a universal healthcare setting.
