Is Total Hip Arthroplasty a Cost-Effective Option for Management of Displaced Femoral Neck Fractures? A Trial-Based Analysis of the HEALTH Study

Description

This presentation by Daniel Axelrod, a resident at McMaster University, addresses the cost-effectiveness of total hip arthroplasty (THA) as a treatment option for displaced femoral fractures in the elderly, specifically comparing it to hemiarthroplasty. Axelrod discusses the significant morbidity and mortality associated with hip fractures in older populations and the treatment considerations, highlighting the potential for THA to offer better functionality. He presents findings from a large, multicenter, randomized trial that evaluated health outcomes and costs associated with both procedures. Although THA is associated with higher costs by an average of $11,000 per patient and offers minimal improvements in quality of life over hemiarthroplasty, results from a sensitivity analysis suggest that THA may be more advantageous for younger patients, potentially reducing costs and improving quality-adjusted life years. This analysis contributes to the broader discussion on healthcare resource allocation and the implications of surgical preferences in treatment decisions.
