Local Administration of Vancomycin Powder in Orthopaedic Fracture Surgery: Current Practice and Trends

Description

In this presentation by Gerard Slobogean, early results from the PREP-IT trials are discussed, focusing on the controversial use of topical vancomycin powder in surgical wounds and open fracture treatments. Slobogean acknowledges the contributions of key researchers and institutions involved in the trials demonstrating significant variability in the use of vancomycin among surgeons, with findings indicating that 31% of cases employed the treatment. The data reveals particular trends such as a higher prevalence inopen fractures (38%) compared to closed fractures (26%) and varying use across hospital centers, showcasing a wide practice discrepancy. Although the VANCO trial presented beneficial outcomes in reducing gram-positive infections, the presentation emphasizes the ongoing concerns regarding antibiotic stewardship, resistance, and practice standardization in preventing surgical site infections.
