Local Provision of Ioninising Radiation (IR) Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for Female Orthopaedic Surgeons
Description
The presentation, led by Madeleine Garner, discusses a quality improvement project focused on assessing and enhancing the local provision of personal protective equipment (PPE) for female orthopedic surgeons who are exposed to ionizing radiation in operating theaters. The aim is to ensure effective and timely PPE that aligns with new BOA recommendations, particularly addressing the higher risks of radiation-induced breast cancer in female surgeons due to their increased fluoroscopy exposure compared to male colleagues. Despite the identified inadequacies in the current PPE stock—such as tabloid style gowns that lack proper fit and protection—Madeleine describes a proactive effort to procure better-designed gowns that cater to the female anatomy, ensuring greater safety and comfort in high-exposure environments, while suggesting a sustainable replacement strategy for outdated gear.
