Non-Selective Enhanced Recovery After Total Hip and Knee Arthroplasty: One-Year Experience in a High-Volume Tertiary Centre

Description

In this presentation, Deepak Menon, representing Oswestry, discusses the implementation and results of a universal enhanced recovery program for patients undergoing major lower limb joint arthroplasty. This program aims to improve recovery times and patient outcomes by standardizing various aspects of care, including preoperative education, nutritional optimization, and early postoperative mobilization. Deepak highlights the significance of involving all patients regardless of age or comorbidity, noting that traditional studies often exclude older or frail patients.

The findings from a cohort of over 1,800 patients showed successful early mobilization and a notable reduction in length of hospital stay compared to a traditional non-enhanced recovery cohort, with the most significant benefits observed in older patients and those with higher comorbidities. Overall, the data suggest that enhanced recovery protocols are safe and lead to improved patient satisfaction, demonstrating that older patients stand to gain substantially from such programs. Deepak concludes with a mention of ongoing research aimed at further analyzing these outcomes.
