Obesity is Not Associated with Increased Complication Rate and Inferior Outcomes in Medial Patellofemoral Ligament Reconstruction
Description
Nick Sharma, an ST7 registrar in the Oswestry rotation, presents a study on patella instability and the impact of obesity on surgical outcomes following isolated MPFL reconstruction. The study aims to determine if obesity correlates with increased complications and inferior patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). It involved 93 patients categorized by BMI (less than 30 vs. greater than 30) who underwent MPFL reconstruction. Key findings indicate that despite the higher tourniquet time in the obesity group, both groups showed significant improvement in outcome scores postoperatively, with no recurrence of patella femoral instability, challenging previous literature suggesting worse outcomes for obese patients. The study highlights the effectiveness of isolated MPFL reconstruction, even in obese patients, suggesting its safety for treating patella instability under certain conditions.
