Paediatric/Trauma ICL: Adolescent Trauma: Differing Perspectives from the Adult and Paediatric Surgeon: Case Discussion
Description
In this medical presentation, Ryan Katchky revisits a patient's case involving complex arm injuries. After undergoing irrigation debridement and open reduction of the ulna, along with closed reduction flexible nailing of the radius, the patient was assessed two weeks post-operation. Remarkably, signs of radial nerve injury (PIN palsy) were improving, and the need for immobilization at this stage was discontinued. Following a period of lost follow-up, Katchky reconnects with the patient two years after the injury, noting that, aside from some discomfort from hardware, the patient has regained full range of motion and is back to normal activities. Imaging reveals that the radial alignment is mostly restored, although slight dorsal angulation persists, which has not hindered the patient's function. Katchky emphasizes the challenges of achieving perfect anatomical repair in such cases, highlighting that despite the slight complications, flexible nailing often leads to satisfactory outcomes.
