Post-operative Methylprednisolone Taper Course for Distal Radius Fractures: Early Results of a Randomized Control Trial

Description

In this presentation, Corey Spencer discusses research on a "Post-operative Methylprednisolone Taper Course for Distal Radius Fractures." Early results from a randomized controlled trial are shared. The study's purpose is to examine how a six-day low-dose methylprednisolone taper affects pain control and opioid use after surgical fixation of distal radius fractures.

The study included 52 patients divided into two groups: one receiving both intravenous dexamethasone and the taper, and the other receiving only intravenous dexamethasone. The treatment group reported significantly less pain starting on the first post-operative day, with the most substantial difference on day four. Additionally, patients in the treatment group consumed less than half the opioids compared to the control group by the end of the first week.

Results indicated no increased complications such as infection or wound healing issues related to the treatment. In conclusion, the study suggests that a methylprednisolone taper can effectively reduce pain and opioid consumption post-surgery, without significant adverse effects.
