Predictors of Survival, Local Recurrence and Metastasis in Leiomyosarcoma of Trunk Wall and Extremities: A MultiCentre Data Analysis of 488 Patients

Description

The presentation is conducted by Mohammed Mubarak, a surgical trainee at RVI, who discusses a multicenter analysis of Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) affecting the trunk wall and extremities, based on data from 488 patients. Leiomyosarcoma represents 10% of soft tissue sarcomas, arising from smooth muscle, yet its pathogenesis remains unclear, with varied prognostic factors. The study aims to assess the impact of clinical and pathological factors on survival and recurrence in LMS patients. The data, collected from six centers across the UK and Europe, reveals that 60% of LMS cases are high grade, with over half exceeding 5cm in size, highlighting significant histopathological indicators like nuclear pleomorphism and necrosis. Treatment outcomes show a mean survival of 56.3 months, with important metrics on recurrence and metastasis rates. Key survival prognostic factors identified include tumor size, mitoses, and presentation stage, while depth and age impact metastasis risk. Novel prediction models are developed based on these findings, aiming for improved accuracy of prognosis, with continued research planned for further validation of the results.
