Prospective Cohort Study of the Early Outcomes of Total Hip Arthroplasty in Adolescents

Description

This presentation discusses a study on hip arthroplasty in adolescents with end-stage degenerative hip disease, presented by Dr. Simon Kelley. It highlights the limited treatment options for this age group and the necessity of a multidisciplinary approach, utilizing a team of pediatric and adult orthopedic surgeons at SickKids. Key outcome measures were presented, including the Oxford Hip Score, WOMAC score, and ASK-P scores, indicating significant improvements in pain and physical function post-surgery. The study included 29 patients who underwent total hip arthroplasties with a focus on varying underlying pathologies. Surgical outcomes were promising, with no significant complications and excellent overall improvement in patients' quality of life. The presentation advocates for a collaborative surgical strategy, combining pediatric and adult expertise, as an effective model for managing this challenging condition.
