Recruitment Patterns in a Large International Randomized Controlled Trial of Perioperative Care in Cancer Patients Trial

Description

In this presentation, Aaron Gazendam discusses the findings and methodologies of the PARITY trial, the first international multicenter randomized controlled trial concerning orthopedic oncology and ralpsiurniti, completed in October 2019. He emphasizes the necessity of a collaborative approach in the face of the rarity of soft tissue and bone sarcomas. Gazendam reflects on recruitment challenges and experiences from the trial that could shape future studies, comparing recruitment patterns across various sites, including North American and international locations, and public versus private healthcare models.

Key focus points include how the presence of research personnel expedited site readiness for enrollment, with North American sites demonstrating quicker readiness compared to international sites. However, he notes that once operational, international sites exhibited higher monthly enrollment rates. The presentation also points out the effectiveness of research and communication strategies used during recruitment, such as maintaining an active trial website, newsletters, and presenting at conferences. Gazendam concludes by highlighting ongoing recruitment challenges in the context of insurance-based healthcare systems, particularly the fragmentation in privatized settings that may hinder comprehensive sarcoma care and recruitment efforts for clinical trials.
