Return to Competition following Clavicle Fractures in Professional Road Cyclists
Description
This VTT text outlines a presentation led by Alastair Konarski, an orthopedic trainee from Manchester, focused on his research about the recovery timeline for professional cyclists coming back to competition after suffering clavicle fractures. The study involved analyzing records from over 1,000 cyclists between 2015 and 2020, where 140 cases of primary clavicle fractures were identified. The average time for these athletes to return to competition was approximately 60 days. Additional findings highlighted that injuries sustained in races, often due to crashes, were more common than those occurring during training. Surgical intervention was prevalent, with many cyclists able to resume training on indoor trainers within a week post-injury. The presentation noted significant variations: cyclists injured later in the season had longer recovery times compared to early-season injuries. Overall, the results indicate a high recovery rate and shorter time to return when compared to other contact sports, suggesting that the non-contact nature of cycling might facilitate quicker rehabilitation.
