Return to Sports Following Lower Limb Musculoskeletal Tumour Surgery – A Systematic Review

Description

This presentation, led by Ian McNab and presented by Metin Buldu, focuses on a study regarding the return to sports following musculoskeletal lower limb tumor surgeries. Metin introduces the objectives of the study, which seek to identify sports activities post-surgery, evaluate outcomes, and explore barriers to returning to sports. A systematic review was conducted, with a screening of 838 papers, ultimately narrowing down to 22 relevant studies from the years 1985 to 2020. The findings indicate that swimming is the most commonly cited sport for patients who underwent such surgeries, with a notable 58.4% returning to some form of activity. The study highlights various surgical procedures, the differences in sports participation, and notes that postoperative complications—including pain and instability—pose significant barriers to recovery. The data suggests that rotationplasty patients have better outcomes in sports participation compared to those who underwent other types of surgeries. Metin advocates for standardized outcome measures in future research to enhance patient counseling and care following surgery, emphasizing the necessity for further investigation into long-term sports participation after surgical intervention in the context of lower limb tumors. The presentation concludes with acknowledgments to individuals who inspired the research and the ongoing aspiration to improve patient outcomes.
