Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement – A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Complications and Patient Outcomes Dependant on Prosthesis Design
Description
This presentation, led by Ella Burden, an ST4 registrar, discusses a systematic review and meta-analysis evaluating the complications and patient outcomes associated with different prosthesis designs in reverse total shoulder replacement (rTSR). The review focuses on how variations in prosthetic designs—specifically medialized versus lateralized designs—affect patient outcomes, particularly complications like scapula notching, glenoid loosening, and overall patient-reported outcomes (PROMS). The study involved a comprehensive review of over 1,000 abstracts, ultimately narrowing findings to 42 studies that underwent methodological quality assessment and data synthesis. Key findings indicated that while complications like scapula notching were more prevalent in certain designs, overall clinical outcomes did not significantly differ between the prosthesis philosophies studied. The presentation concludes with the intention of guiding informed discussions regarding surgical risks during patient consent processes.
