Sexual Function Before and After Hip Arthroscopy: A Study Using The NAHR Dataset

Description

In this light-hearted talk, K H Sunil Kumar discusses the influence of hip arthroscopy on sexual function, analyzing data from the NAHR dataset with significant contributions from statistician Richard. The presentation addresses the ramifications of young adult pathology on patients in reproductive age and highlights the limited research available on this topic. Importantly, it references recent Canadian investigations and a paper from Cambridge emphasizing the impact of hip-related issues on sexual activity, particularly for women.

The study examines self-reported sexual function before and after hip arthroscopy in patients over 18 years old between January 2012 and October 2020, using iHOT-12 scores to measure outcomes. It reveals that while the majority of the 7,639 patients were female, a considerable number considered sexual activity significant to their quality of life, leading to notable findings that the sexual function scores improved post-surgery. Notably, female patients exhibited a more significant increase in sexual function scores compared to males, albeit males began with higher initial scores.

Further analysis across different age groups showed consistent trends, suggesting that both younger and older patients experienced improvements in sexual function after surgery. The conclusion reinforces the importance of addressing sexual health with patients, underlining the need for adequate counseling on this often-ignored aspect of patient recovery after hip surgery. Overall, the talk sheds light on a crucial yet seldom-discussed element of hip arthroscopy outcomes, advocating for better communication and understanding of patients' holistic needs.
