Teaching Large Joint Clinical Examination: Is There a Role for Educational Videos to Augment Teaching? A Randomised Single Blinded Control Trial
Description
Ellie Flatt, an orthopedic trainee from Sheffield, presents a study on advancing clinical examination skills through technological methods. She emphasizes the crucial role of competent clinical examinations in patient care, highlighting a lack of evidence on effective teaching methods for these skills in medical training. Flatt discusses the evolution of medical education influenced by technology, noting the increasing technological savviness of students and the necessity for adapting them to a digitalized healthcare system.
The study compares two teaching modalities: traditional face-to-face small-group seminars and a combination of these seminars with an online video resource, focusing on the clinical examination of large joints. Results from the study show that students who used the video resource alongside face-to-face teaching demonstrated statistically greater improvement in their examination skills, suggesting that video can effectively augment traditional methods without replacing them.
Flatt concludes by thanking the BOA and acknowledging the importance of remote access to learning materials, especially highlighted by recent global events. She offers to answer questions from the audience, engaging in discussions about the study's methodology and potential areas for future research.
