The Global Impact of COVID-19 on Surgeons and Team Members (Global COST) Study
Description
In this presentation, Zahra Jaffry, an ST3 trainee on the Percival Pott training program in London, presents findings from the global impact study of COVID-19 on surgeons and team members, conducted by the OrthoGlobe Collaborative. The study aimed to evaluate the physical, mental, financial, and family well-being of healthcare workers in 54 countries. Through an online survey, 1,590 responses were collected, revealing important statistics about access to personal protective equipment (PPE), mental health scores, salary changes, and time spent with family during the pandemic. Results highlighted a significant increase in anxiety and depression among participants, particularly for those who faced PPE shortages or reduced salaries. The presentation concludes with a discussion on institutional support systems, showing disparities between high and low Human Development Index (HDI) countries and emphasizing the need for improved support measures for the global health workforce. Zahra thanks collaborators for their contributions to the survey.
