Time to Return to Sport following Hip Resurfacing Arthroplasty: A Meta-analysis
Description
The presentation, led by Ahmed Magan from University College London Hospital, provides a thorough meta-analysis focused on the timeline for returning to sports after hip resurfacing arthroplasty. He begins by establishing his credentials and declaring no conflicts of interest, before outlining the high functional outcomes and activity levels achieved after such surgeries, referencing over 1.2 million cases recorded in the UK National Registry. Magan describes the demographic specifics of hip resurfacing patients, notably their median age of 55 years, emphasizing the study's objective to assess the time frame for resuming sports post-operation.
With a systematic review involving databases such as PubMed and Cochrane, the analysis incorporated 11 studies which met inclusion criteria, ultimately assessing 659 patients. The results showcased 90.9% of patients returned to sports by the final follow-up, with significant return rates at various intervals: 91% at three months, 96.8% at six months, and 82.3% at twelve months.
A forest plot was presented to illustrate variations among studies, while functional outcome scores such as WOMAC showed notable improvements. Among complications documented in eight of the studies, the overall complication rate stood at 3%, albeit lacking detailed confirmation on certain adverse events.
In conclusion, Magan highlights the positive increase in return-to-sport rates following hip resurfacing within the first year, while acknowledging the variability within the data sets. He expresses hope that the findings will serve as a valuable resource for clinicians in guiding discussions with patients regarding their rehabilitation and return to physical activities. The session wraps up with a thank you to attendees.
