Time to Return to Sport following Total Hip Arthroplasty: A Meta-analysis
Description
A presentation by Ahmed Magan from University College London Hospital focusing on a meta-analysis concerning the timeline for returning to sports after undergoing total hip arthroplasty. The analysis aims to provide clinicians and patients with evidence-based insights into the outcomes of such surgery, specifically addressing the percentage of patients who can resume sports activities post-surgery. The study analyzed data from multiple databases on patients with prior sports involvement undergoing hip replacements due to arthritis. It found that 84.4% of patients returned to sports with significant variation in timing—76% at four to six months and over 90% at six to twelve months post-surgery. The findings also noted low complication rates associated with the procedure, underscoring the importance of encouraging early resumption of physical activity while ensuring patient safety.
