Time to Return to Sport following Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Meta-analysis

Description

This presentation is delivered by Ahmed Magan, who introduces a meta-analysis focused on the time it takes for patients to return to sports after undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The aim of the analysis is to assess not only the timeframe for returning to physical activity post-surgery but also the proportion of patients who successfully resume sports, providing valuable insights for both clinicians and patients alike.

The urgency of this topic is underscored by the increasing number of TKA procedures performed, especially among younger and more active patients. The presenter highlights that between 2017 and 2019, over 270,000 TKAs were recorded in the UK alone. The analysis uses a structured methodology, employing a PICO framework for research criteria, and includes a comprehensive review of literature from major databases up to late 2020.

Through the elimination of duplicates and irrelevant studies, nine studies involving 1,089 patients were ultimately included. The findings show that by three months, 18% of patients had returned to sports, climbing to 70% at six months and finally reaching an impressive 84% at the one-year mark.

Additionally, the analysis reviews patient-reported outcomes, indicating an overall satisfaction with their sports activities following surgery, and notes the majority of patients experienced improvements in their quality of life as measured by common scoring systems. Complication rates were less frequently reported, but some examples are given to suggest a relatively low incidence of adverse events associated with TKA.

In conclusion, the data suggests a high rate of successful return to sports following TKA, emphasizing the need for informed discussions between healthcare providers and patients regarding expectations and recovery timelines.
