Tonnis Angle and Acetabular Depth Ratio Predictors of Dislocation Following Hemiarthroplasty for Hip Fractures
Description
In this presentation, Vatsal Gupta addresses the critical issue of dislocation following hip hemiarthroplasty, highlighting the significant challenges it poses to patient outcomes. He discusses the alarming mortality rates associated with dislocations—65% for first-time occurrences within the first month, escalating to 75% with subsequent dislocations. Gupta emphasizes the need for further research into acetabular morphology as a factor in dislocation risk, particularly focusing on two key radiographic markers: the Tönnis angle and the acetabular depth ratio. He presents data collected from 2011 to 2020, comparing dislocation cases with controls and finding that abnormal acetabular morphology was significantly more prevalent in those who experienced dislocations. The findings suggest that higher Tönnis angles and lower acetabular depth ratios correlate with an increased risk of dislocation, with odds of dislocation being eight times greater for one abnormal marker and twelve times for both. Gupta concludes that these easily assessable measurements can guide pre-operative planning and risk management strategies for patients, ultimately enhancing surgical outcomes.
