Use of a Continuous All-inside Meniscal Repair Device Produces Excellent Outcomes for Meniscal Repair in Patients With and Without Concurrent ACL Reconstruction
Description
The presentation is delivered by Sarah Shaw, a junior doctor at North Manchester General, focusing on the use of a continuous all-inside meniscal repair device for treating meniscal tears in patients, both with and without concurrent ACL reconstruction. Meniscal tears are common knee injuries that can occur due to acute injuries or degenerative changes, significantly impacting patients' daily lives. Surgical options include partial meniscectomy and meniscal repair, with repair generally associated with better long-term outcomes. The continuous all-inside suture technique is highlighted for its biomechanical advantages and potential for improved clinical outcomes. During a four-year study involving 35 patients who underwent this surgery, high scores in functional assessments (Tegner and IKDC) were achieved, showing a strong return to sports. Despite some patients requiring further surgical intervention, the overall survival rate was high, prompting the authors to advocate for the use of this technique while calling for more research into long-term outcomes.
