Professor Bill Walter

Biography

Professor Bill Walter is a specialist hip and knee surgeon. Bill Walter, Orthopaedic Surgeon, is the Professor of Orthopaedics and Traumatic Surgery at the University of Sydney and Royal North Shore Hospital and he treats private patients at the Mater Hospital. He is an experienced surgeon with excellent results and very low complication rates, having performed thousands of joint replacements and specialising in this surgery for 20 years. For hip replacement, he uses high quality implants and performs the anterior surgical technique or the posterior surgical technique. He is one of few surgeons who offers the resurfacing hip replacement, which is particularly suited to fit males under 65 years. In knee replacement, he performs both partial or total knee replacement and achieves excellent results with the new sagittally stable medial pivot knee. Professor Walter is a member of the Australian Orthopaedic Association and a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Professor Bill Walter uses precision equipment including robotic and sensor technologies. Combined with minimally invasive surgical technique, locally targeted pain control and a rapid recovery program, patients are able to mobilise early and recover quickly. He served as Chairman of the department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Mater Hospital from 2011 to 2014. Professor Walter hosted the International Society for Orthopaedic Centres meeting in Sydney in 2017. Professor Walter’s research is published in peer reviewed international arthroplasty journals; he is often invited to present his findings at international scientific orthopaedic conferences as a member of faculty and as a member of the expert panel. Professor Walter’s current research interests include knee biomechanics, computer navigation and precision in the operating room.
